FlashGreek is a deck of Greek vocabulary cards that does more than a paper card can. Pick your textbook and the chapters you’re on, and FlashGreek builds the quiz. The words that occur 20 times or more in the New Testament come with a picture and a memory hook, audio for both sides of the card, and a verse where the word is used. When a gloss won’t stick, the picture and the sentence usually will. It’s hard to forget πνεῦμα once you’ve linked it to pneumatology.
You can study the way your class does, chapter by chapter in any of 13 introductory and intermediate grammars, or step outside the textbook. Drill words by how often they occur in the New Testament, by shared root, or by the chapter of the New Testament you’re about to read. There’s a principal parts drill for the verbs that change shape on you. The app keeps count of how often you’ve got each word right, so you can drop the ones you know and spend your time on the ones you don’t. When your hands are busy, slideshow mode plays through the cards with audio on a loop.
Which edition? If you want everything, get FlashGreek PRO: every word in the Greek New Testament, all 13 grammars and every study mode. If you’re using Mounce’s Basics of Biblical Greek and only need that book, FlashGreek: Mounce edition costs less and can be upgraded to PRO inside the app later. Not sure yet? FlashGreek LITE is free. Try every mode and the first two chapters of any grammar, then upgrade when you’re ready.
Everything is inside the app. There’s no account, no ads and no connection needed to study.
What you can do

- Learn the words that occur 20 times or more in the New Testament with a picture mnemonic, audio for both sides of the card and a New Testament example.
- In PRO, drill words by how often they occur in the New Testament, or by root to see families of related words together.
- In PRO, practise the principal parts of verbs, chosen by frequency.
- In PRO, get ready to read a passage by learning the less common words in one New Testament chapter or a run of chapters.
- Narrow a set to nouns, verbs, adjectives or other words, and flip the cards to go from English to Greek.
- Leave out words you already know. The app counts every correct answer and can skip words you've got right a set number of times.
- Require one, two or three correct answers per card before it counts as learned.
- Listen hands-free in slideshow mode, with a 3, 5 or 6 second delay and an optional loop.
- Tap the info button on a card to see its part of speech and any English derivatives.
